How you can “Escape the Ordinary”

Those three words were on an advertisement for a new attraction in town, “Escape the Ordinary”. The brochure I had picked up caught my eye as I was getting out of my car.

“Escape” from what we do every day, “the Ordinary”.

I started thinking about that statement and realized, I don’t like it….at all. We do too much escaping the ordinary, don’t we?

[New Post] The Parable of the Tree

Each of the trees were green and strong. Oaks they were and strength was something they were proud of. The trees talked with one another and compared how strong they were.

A small acorn grew and grew until it had become a young tree. His branches were green and wide. He had the tallest branches and greenest leaves of all the young trees.

I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m doing it anyways

IMG_2571

It’s the truth. I don’t have a masters in the English language. In fact, I hated English class. I’m not a huge presence on social media. Often times, I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m not Max Lucado (my FAVORITE author). In fact, I feel like he’s Picasso and I’m using a box of crayons.

But, you know what? It doesn’t matter. I’ve discovererd I have a “little” talent so I’m gonna use it the best that I can. I know I can help someone and I know I will. I’ve also found that my harshest critic is me. I want everything perfect, but I know it probably never will be.

Why I like Nicodemus

Why do I like Nicodemus? He was, after all, a Pharisee. You know, the snobs of the Bible. They knew it all already. They wore their fancy outfits, said their fancy prayers, and heck they even wore a little box on their forehead that had a scripture in it. They wanted to be seen. Now they were a smart group of people. You didn’t just become a Pharisee. It was work. They were very particular in following the laws exactly. I’m not sure if Nicodemus rejected Jesus at first or not. But I do know that he did what each of us should do; ask questions.

He had questions in his heart that needed answers. Following the law all of those years wasn’t satisfying him on the inside. When he saw Jesus, he saw something different. He felt something different. He knew something was different. He could have ignored it and continued his strict stance of the laws, but he didn’t. He snuck by night and found where Jesus was. Then, he started asking questions.

“Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him”. (John 3:2).

He started with a statement but then Jesus blew his mind

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. (John 3:3).

This must have confused the law abiding Nicodemus. “How can I go back into my mothers womb. This makes no sense at all.” For a moment, he may have even doubted why he came asking questions. But he didn’t get mad and walk off. He didn’t say “That’s stupid”. No, he asked a question.

“How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” (John 3:4)

Jesus must have loved this. A Pharisee, that supposedly already knows all the answers, coming to him like a child with tons of questions. Instead of asking “Why is the sky blue” or “Why do birds peck the ground”, he was asking deep spiritual questions. Jesus didn’t waste any time. He answered again.

“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:5-8).

Nicodemus could have stopped there. He could have said “I’ve heard enough”, but he didn’t he kept asking question. He then asked:

“How can these things be?” (John 3:9)

Jesus kept answering the questions. One of his answers to Nicodemus is kind of well known, you know, it’s in John 3:16.

This is how we should approach Jesus. He loves it. He’s a teacher. He wants us to ask questions. It shows we’re interested. It shows we want to learn. It shows we want to draw closer. Nicodemus gave us the perfect example to follow. He was unsure and kind of afraid (he came at night so he wouldn’t be seen), but he needed answers. He couldn’t stand it any longer.

Try and copy Nicodemus. Come to Jesus and ask some questions. Ask him whatever you would like. Be genuine. Ask for guidance, ask for understanding. But remember this, he may answer you any number of ways. You should be open to his response.

What questions do you have for Jesus today?
